Why create a silence?

A silence suppresses notifications for alerts that match a set of labels during a window you choose. It doesn’t stop Grafana from evaluating the rule — the alert still fires internally, you just don’t get paged for it.

Silences are the right tool for planned, one-off events: a maintenance window, a deploy, or a known noisy period. They prevent alert fatigue without disabling your monitoring.

Because evaluation continues, you keep a full record of what happened during the window, and notifications resume automatically when the silence expires.
