Create a silence
Welcome to the learning path that shows you how to create a silence. A silence suppresses notifications for alerts that match a set of labels during a time window you choose — useful during planned maintenance when you expect alerts to fire but don’t want to page anyone.
In this path, you’ll set a time window, add label matchers, verify which instances are affected, and submit the silence.
Here’s what to expect
When you complete this path, you’ll be able to:
- Open the silence creation form
- Set a start time and duration for the silence
- Add label matchers that select which alerts to silence
- Verify the affected instances and submit the silence
Before you begin
Before you create a silence, ensure you have:
- A Grafana Cloud account. To create one, refer to Grafana Cloud.
- Editor or Admin permissions to manage silences.
- Alert rules with labels you can match on.

More to explore
Silences are one way to control notifications. You can also use mute timings for recurring maintenance windows and notification policies for routing.
